The Connection

Squirt, Squirt

mikeThe Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard once wrote about a town where a fireman lived.  Everyone liked the fireman because he was such a nice guy.  He made it a habit to be gentle and kind, which was unusual for firemen, who were supposed to be tough.

There was a fire one day, and the fireman charged to the scene of the fire with his fellow firemen and all their heavy equipment.  As they arrived at the scene, they were surprised to see about 200 townspeople standing between them and the flames.  Each of them was standing there with a water pistol, going squirt, squirt, squirt, squirt.

The fireman asked, “What’s going on here?”

A spokesman for the group turned and said, “Well, we appreciate this wonderful work you’re doing in our community, and each of us has come to contribute in some small way to your work.”  Squirt, squirt.

The fireman said, “I don’t get it.  You’re all crazy!”

“Oh, we realize that we all could do more, couldn’t we folks?” said the spokesmen.

“Most definitely,” everyone said, “But we just wanted to offer this token of our support.”  Squirt, squirt.

“You have to appreciate the fact that everyone is willing to offer a token contribution to the cause,” said the spokesman.

And everyone said, “Amen!”  Squirt, squirt.

At that, the exasperated fireman shouted, “Get the #*#! out of here!  This is no picnic!  This is a fire, and a fire doesn’t require well-meaning people who come to give token contributions.  A fire is a place where people come to give their lives.”

Jesus has issued an urgent call to his church.  “Snatch others from the fire and save them.” (Jude 23, NIV)  This is not a request for a token contribution.  It’s not something that we can take a stab at now and then.  There is a fire; people are in danger; we are responsible to save as many as we can.  If that’s not urgent, then what is?

APEX has several different purposes, one of which is to present the life-saving, life-changing message of Jesus to those who are in danger.  This is not a squirt gun effort.  This is a huge undertaking that is unprecedented in our church’s history.

Please take a minute right now and pray.  Pause from what you’re doing and pray for this new ministry.  Pray that God will work in a powerful new way through our efforts.  Pray that He will use us to reach those who are lost in our community.

Lord, take our lives and consecrate them to your purposes.

Mike
