The Connection

What Was His Name?

mikeI don’t even remember his name.  But that doesn’t matter.  He made an impression on me that I’ll never forget.

His hair was dark, and it was always messed up.  That’s how he liked it.  He had some tattoos.  Just by looking at him, it was obvious that life had been pretty rough.

Where did I meet him?  I met him at Cincinnati Bible College (now known as Cincinnati Christian University).  We were both students in a preaching class.  One day, he got up in front of our class to give his testimony.  Throughout Jr. High and High School, he had been involved in a gang on the streets of Cincinnati.  Fights, drugs, robberies, etc.  All of this was just a part of life for him.

Through an inner city ministry, he had come to know Jesus.  Now, he was at Bible College.  But he wasn’t interested in finding a ministry in a church.  He told us that he was going back to the same tough streets that he came from.  Except this time, he wasn’t going back to get into gang brawls, to deal drugs, or to rob another convenience store.  This time, he was going back to share his faith.

You see, that’s what Christians do.  We often think of a mission field as a far off, third world country.  Obviously that is a viable and necessary mission field, but we can never forget that we can make an impact right where we are.  You can be a difference maker in your school, at your job, in your community, in your family.  Your mission field is closer than you think.  That’s what a guy in my class taught me.  I just wish I could remember his name.

I love you all.

Our annual church picnic was fantastic!  Everyone enjoyed the food and the fellowship.  A lot of us were sore on Monday from playing softball, football, and volleyball, but it was worth it!  You can check out Mike’s blog (mikesblog.ameliachurchofchrist.com) for more thoughts on our picnic.
