The Connection

An Inconvenient Truth

mikeThis past Sunday we completed our five-week series on giving.  I’m sure some of you are glad that it’s finally over.  There were some interesting comments after each of the five messages.  I’m sure there were many more interesting thoughts that remained unsaid.

I know a lot of pastors who rarely, if ever, talk about money or giving.  (I’ll give you a minute to repine why ACC didn’t hire one of them instead of me…ok, that’s enough.  You’re hurting my feelings.)  I hope that we all have an understanding that we must follow the Bible in our teaching and preaching.  And the plain fact is that the Bible talks A LOT about generosity and giving.  We actually don’t talk enough about it!

It is not fun to teach on this topic, but it must be taught.  Look at these words from the Old Testament book of Isaiah.  “They have turned against the LORD and can't be trusted. They have refused his teaching and have said to his messengers and prophets: Don't tell us what God has shown you and don't preach the truth. Just say what we want to hear, even if it's false. Stop telling us what God has said! We don't want to hear any more about the holy God of Israel.” (Isaiah 30:9-11, CEV)

To borrow the title of Al Gore’s movie about global warming, the Bible’s teaching on generosity and giving is “An Inconvenient Truth.”  It is not a warm and fuzzy notion to sacrificially give the best part of our money and resources to the Lord.  Nevertheless, it is the truth.  It is my prayer that through this series, we have been encouraged to trust God by following the teaching of his Word…even if those teachings are inconvenient.

In His Love,

Mike

What’s The Big Deal?
We are starting a new series this Sunday called, “What’s The Big Deal?”  We’re kicking off the series with a special combined session at 9:30 am.  All our classes (Jr. High-Adult) will join together in the auditorium for a session called, “What’s the Big Deal About the Bible?”  Then the message during the worship hour will be, “What’s The Big Deal About Baptism?”  The series will conclude on October 22 with a message called, “What’s the Big Deal About the Lord’s Supper?”  Be sure to join us for each teaching session as we get back to the basics!
